Tourist tax: How to configure and calculate it

Written by Emilia

The tourist tax is a mandatory tax in many destinations and may vary depending on local regulations. To make it easier to manage, users on Pro or Elite plans can configure all applicable conditions, reductions and exemptions directly from the platform.

⚠️ This configuration is for informational purposes only within our system, so it will not be automatically synced with external channels or the booking engine.

Where can I configure the tourist tax?

You can access the settings from:

My Accommodations → Accommodation → Options → Touristic taxes

From here, you can define all the parameters established by your local regulations:

  • Amount per person per night

  • Maximum number of nights

  • Minimum age for the tax to apply

  • Specific exemptions or reductions

Age exemptions

Under some regulations, guests under a certain age are exempt from paying the tourist tax. For the tourist tax calculator to take this into account correctly, guests must be registered through Fast Check-in.

This allows the system to access their date of birth and calculate their exact age at the time of check-in.

How is the tourist tax calculated for bookings?

Once you have configured the rules, you can automatically calculate the corresponding amount for each new booking.

Syncing the tourist tax with channels from AvaiBook

Some channels allow you to configure and sync the tourist tax, although certain limitations may apply. In AvaiBook, it is important to add the tourist tax directly to the connection settings for each of these channels to ensure that the information is correct and up to date.

Below, we explain how it works for each channel:

Airbnb: Tourist taxes can be applied, but how they are managed and charged depends on the local regulations of the destination. For the tax to be displayed correctly, you must configure it in the AvaiBook connection with Airbnb, as it is not automatically synced from AvaiBook's internal tourist tax settings.

Booking.com (with a Full Sync connection): Booking.com displays the tourist tax in the booking, but the host is responsible for managing and collecting it. The tourist tax must be configured in the AvaiBook connection with Booking.com so that it is correctly displayed on the platform.

Vrbo: Tourist tax syncing is usually limited and may require manual management. In AvaiBook, you must enter the tax directly in the Vrbo connection settings so that it appears on bookings made through this channel.

HomeToGo: As with Vrbo, the tourist tax is not automatically synced. You must add the tax through the connection settings in AvaiBook so that it is displayed correctly.

You can access the connection settings for each channel from the accommodation page in AvaiBook. The following image shows you how to do this step by step:

For Booking.com with a limited connection, Expedia and other channels not mentioned above, the tourist tax must be configured directly on each platform, as it is not automatically synced from AvaiBook.

Collecting the tourist tax: important recommendations

AvaiBook does not directly manage the collection of the tourist tax. It is therefore important to bear in mind that the tax should always be collected from the check-in date onwards, never before. This is because the tourist tax is a tax that must be collected once the guest has checked in at the accommodation.

You have two options for collecting the tourist tax:

  • Collect it directly at the accommodation: You can collect the tourist tax from the guest in person upon arrival or during their stay.

  • Collect it manually through AvaiBook: If you have the guest's card details, you can create a manual charge from the booking page in AvaiBook. Remember that this charge must always be made from the check-in date onwards. Simply enter the corresponding amount and process the charge manually.
