What is phishing and how can you protect yourself?

Phishing | Data theft | Fraud | Unauthorized account access

Written by Adriana Silva

Cybercriminals remain active and, especially after the pandemic, have increased their efforts to obtain confidential information using deceptive techniques such as phishing.

What is phishing?

Phishing is a type of online fraud in which attackers impersonate legitimate companies or entities (such as banks, booking platforms, or service providers) in order to steal sensitive information: passwords, banking details, credit card numbers, and more.

These fraudulent attempts can arrive via:

  • Email

  • Text messages (SMS)

  • Phone calls

  • Fake websites that imitate official ones

How can you recognize a phishing attempt?

Here are some key tips to protect yourself while browsing and using AvaiBook:

✅ How to identify our communications

  • All our official emails come from @avaibook.com

  • Our official login website is: https://app.avaibook.com/login.php

  • Always verify that the URL starts with https (the “s” means it is secure).

  • Be cautious if the URL contains unusual symbols, numbers, or uppercase letters.

🚫 We will never do the following:

  • Request sensitive information by email

  • Ask you to enter banking details on an unsecure website

  • Send suspicious links without explanation or context

Common signs of phishing

  • Emails with unnecessary urgency, such as “your account will be blocked”.

  • Links that lead to pages that mimic official design but use fake URLs.

  • Unusual spelling or grammar mistakes in professional communications.

  • Requests for sensitive data such as passwords or card information.

Recommendations to protect yourself

  1. Do not click on suspicious links.

  2. Verify the sender’s email address.

  3. Enable two-factor authentication whenever possible.

  4. Keep your browser and antivirus software updated.

  5. Save official login pages in your bookmarks.

  6. Be cautious if sensitive data is requested outside of AvaiBook.
